The AFMC Student Questionnaires (ASQ) is a three-part survey series assessing the learner’s journey throughout the MD program. The ASQ encompasses the MD Entry survey, Pre-Clerkship survey and Graduation Questionnaire, and assess the learner’s experience at key points during their medical education: start of the year 1; end of year 2/start of year 3; and end of year 4.
The data from the MD Entry survey, Pre-Clerkship survey and Graduation Questionnaire lead to the Cohort Report, which offers a longitudinal portrait of the medical education experience of learners.
The MD Entry survey is the first of three surveys that form the AFMC Student Questionnaires (ASQ). The AFMC administers this questionnaire to all first year MD students with an aim to gather national information about the demographics of medical students and to learn more about the career aspirations of students as they begin their medical studies. This annual survey is administered confidentially and directly to medical students, in the fall, at the start of their MD Program.
The Pre-Clerkship survey is the second of three surveys that form the AFMC Student Questionnaires (ASQ). The AFMC administers the questionnaire, in the fall, to all MD students at the start of their clerkship rotations with an aim to gather national information about the demographics of medical students and to learn more about their learning experience prior to their clerkship rotations as well as career aspirations as they progress through their medical studies. This annual survey is administered confidentially and directly to medical students, in the fall, at the start of their clerkship rotations.
The AFMC Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) is the third and last survey in the AFMC Student Questionnaires (ASQ) designed to elicit feedback about the educational experiences of students graduating from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programs at the 17 Canadian faculties of medicine. It collects information on the MD Degree experience in areas such as clinical learning experiences, general skills, preparedness for residency, research opportunities, mistreatment and financial information. This annual survey is administered confidentially and directly to graduating students each spring.
The ASQ series of surveys will allow AFMC to follow the same cohort of students as they enter (i.e., MD Entry), progress through (i.e., Pre-Clerkship), and complete (i.e., Graduate Questionnaire) their undergraduate medical education. Given the need to wait for students to progress through the undergraduate medical education system the first completed cohort of students who can complete all three surveys will be the class of 2023 (i.e., 2019 MD Entry, 2021 Pre-Clerkship, and 2023 Graduate Questionnaire). The ASQ Cohort Report will assess the cohort’s (e.g., Class of 2023) program experience with respect to learner background. A Faculty of Medicine should be able to read this report and understand where their program has biases and where learners make career decisions and how their background affects those decisions.
