Aboriginal Health Needs

IPAC-AFMC First Nations, Inuit, Métis Health Core Competencies Framework for UGME
Developed through a broad consultation process with many partner stakeholders, the intent of these core competencies is to provide undergraduate medical educators with broad thematic domains around First Nations, Inuit, Métis health knowledge, skills and attitudes to engage in both patient and community-centered approaches to health care delivery with and for Indigenous peoples in Canada. Implementation of these core competencies will help increase cultural competency and safety between Indigenous and non-Indigenous medical learners/ faculty and between physicians and Indigenous peoples/communities. IPAC-AFMC First Nations, Inuit & Métis Health Curriculum Implementation Toolkit
This toolkit was established on the premise of collaboration with the diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FN/I/M) communities served by the faculties of medicine in order to advance the FN/I/M Health Core Competencies: A Curriculum Framework for Undergraduate Medical Education. The implementation of the core competencies will necessitate the use of old and new resources, varied approaches to teaching, robust evaluation and sustained, equitable participation from those affected by these changes. Grounded in community engagement, it is formatted on the sacred symbol of many peoples, the circle; a recognition of the cyclic nature of development, change and revision. April 2010

IPAC-RCPSC: First Nations, Inuit & Métis Health Initiative
The Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada have been working collaboratively on a multiphase project to improve the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations.

The first phase of this project focused on developing core competencies in First Nations, Inuit and Métis health for postgraduate and continuing medical education programs. The frameworks for both of these programs are available for PDF Postgraduate and PDF Continuing Medical Education

The second phase of this project focused on developing and piloting core curriculum in First Nations, Inuit and Métis Health for select disciplines - Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Psychiatry. IPAC-AFMC Pre-Admissions Support Toolkit for First Nations, Inuit, Métis Students into Medicine
Created through a national workshop hosted by AFMC and the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada (IPAC), this toolkit gives medical faculties a guideline of things that work to support First Nations, Inuit and Métis students' success in their application to a faculty of medicine and during their medical education.
