The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) is deepening its engagement in Canada’s health research ecosystem, championing the needs of graduate students, clinician-scientists, and research trainees who are shaping the future of academic medicine.

Building on the momentum of the AFMC Board of Directors’ Invitational Session on Clinician-Scientists at the International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM) 2025, AFMC President and CEO, Constance LeBlanc shared key insights and recommendations during a panel discussion at the Research Canada Conference on October 9. The event convened leaders from hospitals, government, industry, and the non-profit sector to explore the future of Canadian health research. AFMC’s contribution highlighted the importance of sustained investment, mentorship, and supportive career pathways for emerging clinician-scientists.

AFMC also took part in Gairdner Science Week from October 20–23, a national celebration of cutting-edge research and global health innovation. In partnership with the Gairdner Foundation, AFMC continues to create meaningful opportunities for emerging researchers to gain exposure and advance their careers. This year, four top-ranked students from the ICAM 2025 research poster competition were invited to attend Gairdner Science Week, where they engaged with Gairdner laureates and leading scientists, drawing insight and inspiration from global health research leaders. Representing AFMC at the event, Auguste Ngangué, Manager of Research, shared his reflections, highlighting the importance of supporting and elevating the next generation of scientists.

AFMC continues to play a vital role in shaping Canada’s health research landscape, fostering collaboration across sectors and contributing to a dynamic and innovative academic medicine community.
