AFMC contributes to addressing priority health concerns of the community and population we serve.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined the Social Accountability of Medical Schools as “the obligation to direct their education, research and service activities towards addressing the priority health concerns of the community, region, and/or nation they have a mandate to serve. The priority health concerns are to be identified jointly by governments, health care organizations, health professionals, and the public.”
Canadian medical schools have an important role to play to ensure that the highly valued Canadian health care system continues to provide the necessary access and quality to meet the needs of the population.
AFMC prioritizes initiatives that will enable medical schools and the health care system to better support historically marginalized communities, populations and the planet.
Under its current strategic plan, AFMC is focused on social accountability efforts related to five priority areas:
Guiding Document(s):
AFMC’s work toward social accountability is guided by the Standing Committee on Social Accountability and nine additional Committees and Networks. AFMC thanks all volunteers across the medical education landscape who support this work through the AFMC Committees and Networks.
AFMC also seeks to provide additional resources and elevate like-minded efforts in the work to promote social accountability in the health care context.
AFMC Fee Assistance Programs
AFMC offers two fee assistance programs to help students in financial need.
