Social Accountability

AFMC supports medical schools and the health care system in responding to the priority health concerns of historically marginalized communities, underserved populations and the planet.

Planetary Health

AFMC believes the planet’s health is a Code Red emergency and supports academic health institutions to act toward planetary health education and research, and the transition to climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems.

Current Activities:

Declaration on Planetary Health

The Academic Health Institutions’ Declaration on Planetary Health calls on all academic health institutions throughout the world to take immediate action to halt both the negative impact of their activities on the planet’s natural systems, and to institute adaptive and regenerative measures, including through advocacy.

AFMC Committee on Planetary Health

This Committee seeks out opportunities and solutions for enhancing education of Canadian medical learners (undergraduate, postgraduate and post certification) on planetary health. The Committee’s priority topics include principles, access, resources, best practices, tools, faculty development, collaborations, advocacy, and scholarship.

Network on Global Health

The AFMC Network on Global Health facilitates national collaboration among Canadian medical schools and provides support and advice to the AFMC Board through the AFMC Standing Committee on Social Accountability on strategic and operational matters related to academic medicine and specifically global health.
