The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) has entered into a groundbreaking new partnership with ScholarRx, a leading provider of digital learning tools for medical schools globally. Together, the organizations will expand access to open educational resources (OER) across Canada’s 19 faculties of medicine and will advance a shared vision for a sustainable, globally accessible medical education ecosystem.
Through the partnership, ScholarRx will provide AFMC member faculties with access to “Rx Open” – a platform that enables the creation, sharing and use of open educational content known as “Bricks”, in English and French.
A Brick is a concise, self-contained learning experience — typically focused on a single concept or topic — that can be integrated into a school’s existing curriculum, sequenced into learning pathways, or used independently by students for self-directed study. Because Bricks are modular and can be openly licensed, faculty can adapt, combine, and share them across institutions without the constraints of traditional proprietary content.
Rx Open includes access to ScholarRx’s open-access Bricks library, Brick authoring tools, and select Teaching with Artificial Intelligence (TAI) capabilities. Participating schools will also receive a custom Brick Exchange portal to curate and disseminate content developed by Canadian medical educators.
“AFMC is proud to provide Canada’s medical schools access to ScholarRx tools,” says Dr. Connie LeBlanc, President and CEO of AFMC. “These tools will enable faculty and learners to build, collaborate on, and benefit from quality medical curriculum at a global level. This will amplify the reputation and impact of Canada’s world-class medical education system – and will connect Canadian-based educators and learners with thought leaders and standards of excellence from around the world. This means an even stronger education for future doctors and better patient outcomes over time.”
Bricks in the Rx Bricks open-access library are authored and reviewed by subject-matter experts, including physicians and scientists with deep content knowledge in their disciplines. Faculty who create their own Bricks can add collaborators and peer reviewers, building scholarly review directly into their development workflow. While ScholarRx’s TAI capabilities can assist in the authoring process, the tool is designed to augment – not replace – educator judgment.
Over time, the collaboration between ScholarRx and AFMC is expected to include grant programs to support the development of new open curriculum across Canada, by both faculty and learners.
“This partnership with AFMC marks a meaningful step toward a shared curricular ecosystem that spans institutions and borders,” said Tao Le, MD, MHS, Chief Education Officer of ScholarRx. “Canada’s faculties of medicine have long been leaders in social accountability and educational innovation. By working together on open educational resources, we can model what national-scale collaboration in medical education can look like, one that ultimately benefits learners, educators, and patients well beyond Canada’s borders.”
