The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) congratulates Stuart Carney on his appointment as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University, effective January 1, 2026.
Dr. Carney joins Memorial with an outstanding record of academic leadership and innovation in medical education. For the past nine years, he served as Dean of the Medical School at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia, where he advanced clinical training opportunities across diverse regions, strengthened international partnerships, and championed mental health initiatives for the university community. His leadership has shaped programs that prepare physicians to meet the evolving needs of patients and health systems globally.
“Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine has a proud tradition of serving communities through education and research,” says Dr. Carney. “I am excited to build on that legacy by strengthening partnerships and supporting our talented people as we collectively advance health and well-being.”
A psychiatrist by training, Dr. Carney has held senior roles in medical education in both Australia and the United Kingdom, including Dean of Medical Education at King’s College London. He is widely recognized for his contributions to health-care workforce policy, curriculum development, and strategies that engage students as partners in shaping their education.
Dr. Carney succeeds Dolores McKeen, who has served as interim dean since 2024. AFMC extends its sincere thanks to Dr. McKeen for her dedicated leadership and commitment to Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine.
AFMC looks forward to working with Dr. Carney in his new role as a member of the AFMC Board of Directors and supporting his efforts to foster excellence, equity, and innovation in medical education and health research.
